The lighthouses in the area worthy of a visit are the old and new Cape Henry lighthouses at Fort Story in Virginia Beach. The old lighthouse, built in 1792, is the oldest government-built lighthouse in America. The new Cape Henry Lighthouse is arrayed in an incredible black-and-white checkerboard pattern. The Eastern shore has the red-and-white-striped Assateague Lighthouse which is still in operation.
